Clinical trials play a vital role in the discovery of new medicines. They go through a series of phases to test whether a potential drug is safe and whether it works on humans. If the compound successively passes all phases of clinical trials, it can be submitted for FDA (or other pharmaceutical regulatory agency) approval to become a novel drug. Also, a drug with established effectiveness and bioactivity against one disease may be useful in discovering a new drug indication. The process of re-using known drugs to find a new cure for other diseases is called drug repurposing.
FDA Approved and Potential Drugs library is combined of FDA approved drugs, drug repurposing pharmaceuticals, and compounds that passed at least the first phase of clinical trials. It contains 1975 compounds. Additional information about the clinical trials phase and national clinical trial (NCT) numbers is also available to get a review of the clinical success of the substance.
